Jour Fixe: The Taiwan elections and how they impact U.S.-China relations
2. Februar 2024
Mit Brian Hioe (New Bloom Magazine, Taiwan) und Ralf Ruckus (gongchao.org)
Lai Ching-te from the Democratic Progressive Party won the Taiwanese presidential elections on January 13, 2024. It is likely that, in the next few years, tensions will increase between the government in Taipei, which wants to preserve the status-quo of Taiwan’s de facto autonomy, and the Chinese Communist Party regime in Beijing, which claims the island as part of the People’s Republic of China (PRC).
In this event, Brian Hioe (New Bloom Magazine) and Ralf Ruckus (gongchao.org) will give insights on the historical background of the conflict. They will also discuss the results of the recent elections and the position of different interest groups in Taiwan, the goals and strategy of the Chinese Communist Party, as well as the role of the U.S. regime in the conflict.
The clash of U.S. and PRC economic and political ambitions on a global stage could escalate further on the issue of who has control over Taiwan, and, therefore, affects people in all corners of the world. The aim of the event is to try and sketch out a leftwing position that does not side with capitalist or imperialist interests on either side.
